Before you travel

Important information prior to the trip

Passport, Visa and Insurance

You as participant must have a Machine Readable Passport (MRP), or you risk being sent home when they check your passport! You who are traveling to the USA must also apply for a Tourist Visa (ESTA) online ahead of time; this is your responsibility.

https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta

If the ESTA permit is not granted through the online application, you must apply for a visa through the American embassy in your home country. You are responsible for securing a travel visa in time (as well as travel insurance).

You are required to have your personal travel insurance. The tour operator cannot be held liable if your travel insurance has expired, if you do not have the necessary travel insurances and other types of insurances.

Note: If you are in doubt about your criminal record, it is important to clarify the status with local authorities.

Travel with the tour group or on your own

When you travel with Route 66 International, you are free to decide whether you wish to travel to the destination with the group or book the flight tickets on your own. Alternatively, you can choose to travel directly from the airport nearest to you in your country of departure and meet the rest of the group in the city from which the tour begins. In this case you are responsible for booking your own flight tickets.

It is very important that you do not book your own flight before you have received an email from us that the tour dates are 100% confirmed. We as organizer has no responsibility to refund such expenses if you have booked flights etc yourself.

Participants who book their own tickets will receive discounts on the tour package. As a tour operator, we can not be held responsible if you book tickets before the dates for your trip are secured and that you will suffer financial loss.

We also recommend all our participants to buy  ticket-cancellation insurance from your insurance company or when booking the ticket. Please note that not all personal travel insurances include this. (A ticket-cancellation insurance covers cancellation free of charge in the cases where a participant, a spouse, child, sibling or parent suffer from acute illness, accident or death).

What to bring on the trip/tour

The rule of thumb is one big backpack/bag per person + hand luggage. All baggage is placed in the accompanying vehicle with the exception of the few things you need throughout the day (sunscreen, rain gear, camera etc.). All bikes come with bags.

We recommend that you bring neck-pillows, sleep-inducing tablets, support socks/stockings and perhaps a good book. (The plane ride from Europe to L.A. is generally around 10-11 hours. To Chicago it’s about 7-8 hours).

Remember to pack all life-essential medication into your hand luggage!

Bring an open-face helmet, a MC jacket or other jacket, sunglasses and MC goggles. Helmets are also available and free to rent, but 95% of participants choose to bring their own helmet from home or buy a new Harley-Davidson helmet in the store next-door to the place we pick up our bikes. The store sell all the MC gear you may need.

Also bring shorts, jeans, t-shirt, swim gear, MC foot wear/runners, sandals, small backpack/bag for day trips, and clothes for dining/going out in the evening. It is possible to do laundry at all the hotels, but it’s smart to bring your own detergent. Don’t forget toiletries and essential medications.

You may label your suitcases with these addresses:

Going on the L.A/Hollywood-Chicago Tour:
15000 Hawthorne Blvd, Lawndale, CA 90260, USA
Going on the Chicago-L.A/Hollywood Tour:
3405 W Algonquin Rd, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008, USA
